I made the jump yesterday to update my 4 Macs and my iPad to use iCloud/iOS5 instead of MobileMe. While I have liked MobileMe and found it very useful – I look forward to what iCloud will offer. I often delay in updating my blog and/or my kids’ blogs because the photo is on a different computer or on one of my iPhones/iPads instead of on the computer I am using for the post. With iCloud – I will have access to everything from all my devices. I have seen some slight hiccups along the way – mostly with Mail, but overall – I am looking forward to using this and keeping everything up to date…effortlessly. Finally. Nice work Apple!

iTunes Screensaver in Mac OS X
I generally use the Cosmos screensaver but I recently decided to check out some of the other options. I really thought the iTunes screensaver looked cool – as it shows all your cover art. I then accidentally hovered over one of the album covers and noticed I could actually click on it and switch the current iTunes song. Super cool and a nice touch Apple. I just wish I would have stumbled onto this earlier.
PS – how did I take a screenshot of a screensaver? I opened my System Preferences, clicked on “Desktop and Screensaver”, held down command and shift, clicked in “Test” under screensaver and hit the number 3 to take a full screenshot.

Sample Video Files
There usually comes a time when working on a project where I need to show the client how a particular video plugin works. I sometimes will do a quick Google search to find a sample video file to put in – but today when searching for a “sample MP4 video” – I found something extremely helpful: QuickTime: Sample files. There are sample files in the following format to use:
- H.264 (for iPod models with video capability)
- Animation
- MPEG-4
- 3GPP
- 3GPP2
- MPEG 2
- Sorenson
Thanks Apple for making these available. My search for sample video content just got a lot easier!

The Only Apple x Killer is Apple
All these crazy commercials and talk about the new Droid phone makes me smile. I think back about all the proposed “Apple x killers (x = Mac, Newton, iPod, iPhone) and what makes me smile is there is no third party Apple product killer and I do not see any in the foreseeable future.
The only real threat that these products have/had is actually Apple itself. Either Apple will kill it internally (Newton) or will create something bigger and better that will replace it’s own product.
So even though I enjoyed the Droid commercials – it all sounded a bit familiar (recently with the “iPod killer” Zune) – which come on, who knows someone that has one and has got you so excited you had to have one?
Companies may try and copy, add new functionality that people want…but when it comes down to it, there is just something about those Apple products…

A Trip Down Apple Memory Lane
I have been a die hard Apple fan since I can remember. I have a closet full of old Apple products (desktops, laptops, a Cube, eMates, Newtons, displays, iPods, etc) that I have either had in the past or have since bought for my collection. I ran across a blog post filled with pictures (and memories) of The Evolution of Apple Design Between 1977-2008. If you were ever an Apple fan or have an interest in design – check this out!
On another note – I have been collecting all this Apple stuff so that one day I can go through all of it with my kid(s) and show them just how far we have come. Let’s hope they at least find it semi-interesting!

Seriously Apple – Find an iMovie Interface and Stick to It
Wow. How many times will Apple release a new version of iMovie and completely change the interface and how it works? I cannot tell you how many versions now I have used of iMovie that were completely different than the previous. Each time I have to either waste an hour or so to figure out how to work with my media or read the manual. Good thing I am not afraid to do both – but I feel bad for people who are not as patient as I am.
Amy recently took a grad class on technology in the classroom and the instructor on the last day was going to show everyone how to use iMovie, but unfortunately, the computer they provided to him was new and had the new version of iMovie (iMovie 7) and he was used to iMovie 6…and so he could not do anything. Seriously Apple…

Lost iTunes Music
Recently I had my backup drive die which doubled as my music drive (dumb). I also in the past few weeks – cleaned out my off site backups which included my music (dumb). After not being very excited with what happened – I decided to do some research on some of my options to get my music back. With my fingers crossed – I submitted a form to Apple asking them if I could get my purchased music back: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/lostmusic/. Let’s hope this works!

It is Apple Keynote Time Again…
I love the day of big Apple keynotes given by Steve Jobs. While rummaging around for a disk utility last week – I found my copy of the Macworld 1999 keynote where the Blue and White G3s and multi-flavored iMacs were announced. I had a smile – I eventually owned both and thought they were the best thing ever! Anyway – my friend Ken asked me if I still got as excited as I used to – and the answer is definitely yes. I love everything about the keynotes…but I especially enjoy the post keynote reactions from the people I know. People get so excited – there is even a Keynote bingo!
My predictions:
- I will keep my fingers crossed that the new announcement(s) will increase the value of the stock
- Ken will be underwhelmed regardless of the announcements and let me know what the x should have had
. (This would be true even if Apple released the coolest thing ever – he would find some “fault”. - Ben will be the most likely to compulsively buy the most expensive x. He will justify it somehow and I will be excited to hear about his experience with it…and then I will buy rev 2.
- Mike will buy the newest gadget, regardless of need, and own it with much pride
- Doug and I will sit back, not make and purchases right away, but he will end up talking me into getting something and then after he sees what I get, will get one too.
- My friend Tim that I knew from college and met up with at WWDC in 2005 will talk to me about how we got screwed when we were there because our keynote was about the Intel transition
- Amy will find out a few days later what is announced and tell me about it, even though she should know I knew about it moments after Steve Jobs spoke about it at the keynote
- My parents will also talk to me a few days/weeks later about the new announcement and send me newspaper articles about it
- Amy’s dad will finally be wowed by “x” that he will consider getting one and eventually be a switcher!
