TiVo Mobile

I am a huge TiVo fan (TiVO – not your clunky generic DVR). Outside of TiVo – I cannot thinkg of anything I have used/seen technologically that have worked as expected for years now and still after years of the same – are still as impressive to me as the first time I used them. Skip commercials, view all my photos from my computers, listen to any music I have encoded on my computers, check weather, play games, order videos, season pass shows across multiple channels, record shows by actor, etc, all while being fast and looking and sounding great.

A few weeks (or was it months?) ago I read something about TiVo Mobile. This is a site that is built for mobile devices to make it easy to search for shows and then set your TiVo(s) to record them. I have been using my phone to do this sort of thing since I had a Treo 600 – but this new mobile only site makes it super easy to find that program you forgot to record.

Within a few minutes you can choose your show to record, set a season pass or view upcoming episodes. Thanks TiVo – great job!

Losing a Family…

Yes – I have heard. I have received multiple email messages and concerned phone calls. The soap opera – Guiding Light – that my grandmother listened to on the radio, my mother watched on the TV, and that I have watched ever since the 1980s is going to be cancelled in September. I very disappointed and after watching Guiding Light over the years with just about everyone I know at some time or another…very sad that my “second family” will no longer be around. (As crazy as it sounds, after watching the same show every day (I TiVo it every day…and recorded it on my VCR before that, and skipped class to watch it before that…who needed Spanish 100 anyway?).

Everyday for almost 20 years is something…and I am not really sure what to do. Gain an hour of not watching TV? Check out another soap that has some of my old GL favorites on it? At this point I am going to have to wait and see what some of the actors do and where they go. There is some real acting talent there…

Now that we know the end is near – please get Josh and Reva together…and I mean like tomorrow.

How Late Will I Be Up Tonight?

Each year I enjoy staying up as late as I can so I can go to bed knowing who got elected. The past two elections have made this a little difficult, but I am hoping this year to make it until Barrack gives either speech at Grant Park in downtown Chicago. I hope to go to bed happy this year…at a decent time!

Regardless of who wins, this is an exciting day. I look forward to seeing how many people actually vote, what the voting issues were, and how the voting process will change (or most likely not change) in the next election to handle the issues we had this time around. This day is history in the making…and to be a part of it is an awesome feeling.

My New Favorite HBO Show: Real Time with Bill Maher

I have been in a HBO slump for awhile now. The Wire and Sopranos are done. Curb Your Enthusiasm nor any other show I am really excited about is on…so I started to question why I was paying to get HBO. A few weeks ago I happened to catch Real Time with Bill Maher and really enjoyed it. I enjoy his humor, outlook on politics, and guests that really make for an interesting look at what is going on in politics today. I am sure Ken would pretty much hate him – but he does make an effort to bring both sides to the table. Anyway – that is what I have been enjoying on HBO lately.

Fall is in the Air

This is by far my favorite time of the year. Penn State football, cooler weather, fall golf, and no more bees…what else can you ask for? It brings me great joy to see Joe Paterno on the sidelines every Saturday – he is truly an inspiration. I hate being hot so the cooler weather (50s-60s) is a treat for me. Fall golf is the best. The courses are in great condition, not as many people are golfing, the prices per round are cheaper, and I always play better with my 2 iron after September 1st. Not dealing with nasty bees is a dream come true because if you know me – you know I am not a bee fan at all. Good times!

HD Finally!

Phew – finally after I much frustration and a crappy picture – I am making the move to HD. We wanted to get HD a year or so ago when I first bought the big HD TV, but Comcast did not offer the Big Ten Network (for all our Penn State games) and DirecTV could not get all the needed HD signals because of a few trees in our yard. This week I was determined to get HD so it was a matter of either getting some trees trimmed or hoping Comcast and the Big Ten Network finally came to an agreement. Luckily – the later happened and as of tonight – we will be watching the Olympics in HD. Hello clarity!

My Favorite Thing About the Olympics

When it is time for the Olympics – I end up getting sucked into watching all kinds of sports that I never would think about even enjoying (ice skating, track and field, swimming, etc) and I keep thinking – what is it about these sports that draws me in from “eh…to a heart racing suspense finish.” Normally the last thing I want to watch on TV is figure skating. After about two minutes into the Olympics opening ceremony, I figured out what it is that draws me in – the stories….and everyone seems to have one. The stories make me want these athletes to win regardless of what sport they are participating in. As soon as Bob Costas starts in on a story – I am hooked and all the sudden I want to watch figure skating and care about synchronize diving. I love it an I am so excited the Olympics are on now.

Jappler Recommends: Carnivale

There have been some great HBO shows that almost everyone has at least heard about…Sopranos, Sex and the City, Curb Your Enthusiasm, but not many people are aware of one of their best series (in my opinion) Carnivale. This is a great look at good v. evil in a great, yet mysterious time after the first World War. If you are looking for something interesting to watch during your upcoming holiday break – put this series on your Netflix list.

Full TV Episodes on Your Computer, Take Two

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how you can legally watch almost all network shows on their web site. I wanted to follow up with some comments and afterthoughts. First, I feel it is necessary to say something about each network’s video player. (ABC, CBS, NBC)
Best Online Video Experience Rating

  1. ABC. By far, ABC has the best player. There are plenty of shows available, the video is crisp, it loads fast (little to no waiting), the commercials interruptions are not too frequent, and the UI is great. Overall, it is well put together.
  2. CBS. I have not watched many CBS shows online, but from what I have seen so far, I would rate their player only second to ABC. The show selection is pretty impressive (perhaps the most impressive – but I am partial…they have my soap available). The video loads fast, but is not as crisp as ABC. I think the commercials are done better then ABC (they are less disruptive and fewer). The UI is not as intuitive as ABC, but overall they did a great job
  3. NBC. This is the last network I turn to when nothing good is on TV. The video is ok, but the commercials are spliced in so poorly that it looks like something done by someone with actual film, tape, and scissors. The selection is not as good as the other two networks, and to be honest, I had the highest hopes for NBC. (I see NBC as the Yankee team in the big networks league (most wealthy). They have a lot of room for improvement.

Overall – if you STILL have not checked these full episode catalogs out – don’t you dare complain when “nothing is on”. I am sure you could find something you missed or wanted to check out but never did.
