Jappler Recommends: Mr. Duct

After living in our home for over 5 years and having done some construction/having dogs and cats we decided to get our air ducts cleaned. I did some initial research last week and after talking to the people at Mr. Duct I decided to go with them. They were not the cheapest – but they had they were certified and took time to explain everything.

The process itself took a few hours and was well worth it. Before the cleaning started – they put a camera into our ducts and showed us what they looked like (which was disgusting). After the cleaning – they showed us the same view and low and behold – it was clean.

If you live in the Chicagoland area and are looking to get your ducts cleaned – please give these guys a call. They do great work and are very easy to work with.

Find JS Code Issues and Errors With JSLint

Ever have a page not load properly in IE 7 but it loads fine – without error – with all other browsers? After you validate all your CSS/HTML and the error or funky behavior persists…and you have made sure your doctype is correct – what can you do? Validate your JS using JS Lint.

What is JSLint?

JSLint is a JavaScript program that looks for problems in JavaScript programs. It is a code quality tool.

I just got done with some cross browser consulting (my favorite) – and one of the pages would not load properly in IE 7 due to a JS error which did not make sense to me. I loaded up the offending JS in JSLint and within a few minutes – I figured out what the issue was and how to solve it.

JSLint is invaluable if you do any work with JS – so keep the link handy! You will thank me – and JSLint.

Looking For Inspiration for Over 12 Years: Apple.com

Over the past 12 years (I remember starting to look to Apple for great web design back in 1999) – I have often looked to Apple’s web site for best practices in navigation (top/tabbed), general layout, and usage of imagery when thinking about designing web sites for myself or my clients. I have to admit – in the last year or so I have not gone to Apple’s web site to really spend time looking at what they have done new, until this morning. Look for some proof of this time spent in my next WordPress premium theme.

It did not take long to realize Apple still does web design right. Everything is extremely clean, easy to navigate, the imagery is beautiful, and even the text looks amazing. Apple does a great job of spacing everything, adding in just enough cool javascript (sliders/slideshows, etc) to make everything extremely clean and perfectly executed.

Next time you are thinking about creating a design – take a few minutes and zip around the Apple web site. You cannot help but to be inspired. They have put in an amazing amount of time to piece together something that is truly amazing and I am sure will continue to do so in the years to come.

The Neti Pot

When I first heard about the Neti pot I was actually disgusted and a bit afraid. Everyone who uses it though swears by it and told me it did not hurt, and was the greatest thing for their allergies, colds, sinuses.

This past week I got a killer sinus infection and out of desperation decided to give it a try. After the first time – my sinuses felt better and it was not disgusting or painful. A few days later – I have to admit – that in combination of some extra rest, and some steam/hot towels on my face – my sinuses feel much better. I am now able to go without Advil every 4-6 hours and I am really thankful that I tried it. If you have issues with allergies, a cold, etc – give this a try!

A few months ago – I caught one of the most interesting documentaries on Chernobyl on TV. If you have any interest in this event – check out the documentary online: The True Battle of Chernobyl. It is 90 minutes long and you can watch it full screen. It is definitely an eye opener.

Asset Management with ResourceSpace

This is a follow-up post to my post: Asset Management. I spent an exciting Friday night going through the config, learning the workflow, setting up accounts, and getting to know everything that ResourceSpace has to offer. After a few hours of playing around and applying various customizations (with ease) I am sold on using ResourceSpace for asset management.

What I like about ResourceSpace:

  • It has good documentation – both in the code as well as in a wiki
  • It is easy to customize both in look and feel as well as configuring admin options
  • It has been well thought out and has just about everything you could want (users/groups/fine access control/flash uploads for multiple uploads, contact sheet creation on the fly, etc

What I do not like about ResourceSpace:

  • They use frames
  • The layout is liquid vs. fixed (I am a fixed layout kind of person

The dislikes are minor in the grand scheme of things. Overall – I am excited I gave this a try and look forward to adding and archiving projects in here in the future.

Jappler Recommends: Words With Friends

I admit it – I am hooked on Words With Friends (very similar to Scrabble). One of my friends got me hooked last week and ever since I have been playing with him and some random people online.

What is this? Think Scrabble with a beautiful interface, the ability to play one turn at a time at your own pace – with friends and strangers alike. Some days I will place several words. Other days – I might only have time for one or two words. Games can take a few hours or a few days. Either way – it is a great way to play this word game when you cannot commit to sitting down and focusing for the length of an entire game – all at once. This is very fun and very addicting and I would recommend it to anyone who likes Scrabble.

Download this app for your phone/iPhone/iPad and let’s play! My user name is thejappler.

PS – I am also playing Chess With Friends too – same user name.

Why I Use Google Docs

I have an assortment of clients – all who prefer to pass documentation back and forth in a number of ways: email, spreadsheets, documents, faxed, etc. Over the last year or so I have been using Google Docs for almost all of my client interaction/checklists/etc. Using Google Docs is great for a number of reasons and if you are not using it yet for your documents – please consider giving it a shot.

Why I use Google Docs (and you should too):

  • You can create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc without having to buy or support any software.
  • You can always export the documents as text, PDF, Word, etc if you need to share outside of the Google Docs environment
  • You can actively create documents with more than one person – in real time
  • You can notify others when you have made changes
  • You can choose from hundreds of templates
  • Your documents are saved every few seconds, are on secure and backed up servers
  • There is no software to update
  • There are no Mac/PC issues
  • The interface is familiar and clean

I could go on and on but before you decide to buy the next version of Office, etc – take a look at what Google put together – they did a great job!

My New Obsession: Ancient Aliens

Categorized: Jappler Recommends, TV

I have one of my TiVos set to record “TiVo Suggestions” (TiVo tracks what I like/do not like and then records other similar shows it thinks matches my interests). Awhile back I decided to go through the suggestions and to watch something new. TiVo happened to record an episode of Ancient Aliens on the History Channel. (I watch a lot of space/Universe documentaries).

After watching the first episode – I instantly added it as a season pass. I have been absolutely fascinated by this show which tries to explain things (and make you think about it) like Stone Henge, the Pyramids of Giza, Nazca Lines, and the Moai statues of Easter Island (to name a few). These have always blown my mind so to watch a series on them which pulls in iconography, ancient texts, and modern day examples has been quite enjoyable.

If you have any interest in the world’s unexplained megalithic structures, etc – do yourself a favor and watch an episode. This will surely not disappoint.

Finding Your Pace

We all work at different paces. Some like to try and do everything really quickly so they can relax later. Others wait until the last moment and race to get things done (they find energy and excitement in the challenge to finish). Still others prefer to keep a grueling pace throughout the entire project in order to get everything plus more done.

Although I have done all of the above – if nothing else – Oregon Trail taught me one thing: pace is everything. While some of these routes to the end result will work some of the times, the best way to do it is to go at a realistic – not too fast, not too slow pace. While there may be benefits to either extreme – the costs for both of them are often higher than expected for both you and your client.

If nothing else learned this year – I learned that you should set your pace – not the client. No one knows how much x,y,z tasks take better than you if you do them over and over. The client might be working on this project now, but you are being hired for your professional experience – experience that you have gained by doing similar tasks – and thus you should have the best idea how long/how much something will take.

Any client that needs something in an unreasonable time frame or that constantly has emergencies in off hour time periods is perhaps not the client you want/or even constant “immediate” changes (regardless of the pay). I know it sounds hard to stand up to them or even risk losing some clients, but trust me it is well worth it. Your quality of work will improve as will your mental sanity.

Early in the project – make sure to set the pace. Your client will respect you more and your family/friends will appreciate it too. Just remember – your sanity is worth a lot more then spending weekends/holidays on the phone for something that will not be as important as the time you lost with your friends/family.
