Jappler Recommends: Clean Up Your iTunes Library

I recently did some file cleanup on my main Mac to tidy things up, but indadvertedly wreaked some havoc with iTunes. I had a number of songs that had the “!” for missing and no really good way to delete all of them (there were too many). After doing a few quick searches on the issue – I found my solution: Super Remove Dead Tracks.

Then – to really clean up everything I wanted to remove all the duplicates so I then used Dupin which also worked like a charm.

All is much more organized and cleaner now…

Jappler Recommends: Patrick Collision

The day my twins were born, my mother was on her way home from the hospital and a limo driver decided to make a right turn into my mother – who was driving my Volvo. As soon as I heard about this – I knew there was only one place I would take my car: Patrick Collision in Schaumburg, IL. They are a part of my Volvo dealer’s group – and I have always been impressed with their work and service.

My car was in their hands for a week and when I picked it up today it was like getting a new car. Not only did they do the repairs, they also washed, vacuumed, and waxed my car to make it look polished. All their work is guaranteed for the life of the car and the people I worked with there could not have been nicer. All in all – as much as you never want to deal with collision work – if you have to, make sure you check out Patrick Collision.

Summer Golf is Here

I recently went out golfing for the first time with Doug at my favorite course Foxford Hills. I only got out a few times last year and I was not sure what the outing would be like. When I got there – my putting on the putting green was horrible – and did not get any better when playing 18 holes. Fortunately my drives and my long iron shots were solid and got me on the green plenty of times to put for a birdie or par…which thanks to my putting did not produce too many pars at all and no birdies.

It was nice to get greeted by the starter who said “wow I have not seen you for a long time”. At least he remembered me ;) Now it is time to put some time in on the putting green so I can start to knock off some strokes.

I am in the market for a new 3 wood – I have 0 confidence in mine and it is time I had something that could go a bit longer than my 2 iron. My initial thought is to get the latest PING wood and stick with that. Anyone else have any recommendations?

No One Knows Me Like TiVo…

Categorized: Technology (General), This and That

I recently upgraded to a TiVo Premiere a few weeks ago and since the hardrive is significantly bigger than my previous Series 2 TiVo – I decided to let TiVo make suggestions of what to record with TiVo suggestions and was pleasantly surprised. I have gotten back into the original Batman series (Adam West, Gilligan’s Island, and even some Little House on the Prairie – all some of my favorite shows from my childhood).

TiVo Suggestions also recoded some great movies, documentaries, and other great TV shows so I am now able to watch pretty much whatever I want whenever I have a few minutes to relax – even if I did not purposely record it. At this point – I do not know what I like better – watching shows it records for me or seeing what new shows it thinks I would like each day.

I love TiVo!

Lacking Speed?

Categorized: Hints

Over the last few weeks I have added several new devices to my home network (iPad, guest computers, two new TiVOs, new router, etc) and have noticed my VOIP phone quality go way down. After doing some initial troubleshooting, taking devices offline one at a time, etc – I decided it was time to call my VOIP phone company to see what they had to say. After the initial dummy tasks (unplug, reboot, restart) – we finally got down to it – my connection speed.

I have Comcast, and have been happy with their service for years. Ten years ago – I bought a cable modem to use with my service and have been using it ever since without any issue. After talking to someone from the phone company – they noticed that my cable modem was old and was using DOCSIS 1.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) which I had never heard about before. The customer support person recommended getting a new cable modem which they promised would help my bandwidth issue and thus take care of my poor voice quality issue as well.

I purchased a new cable modem earlier this week (DOCSIS 3.0) and what a difference. The speeds I am seeing down/up are 2-3x the speed I was getting last week – and no more phone quality issues at all.

Overall message/lesson: even though somethings are “working” – if they are older, they are most likely outdated and should be updated sooner than once every ten years. So – if you are like me and are seeing slower than expected speeds, and/or your VOIP quality sucks – make sure to check to see what kind of network equipment you have and if there are newer/better models available.

Back from Blog Vacation – Goodbye Facebook!

Just as we all need a vacation from work, etc – I needed a vacation from blogging. I took a month off to think about what I wanted to do with this and my other blogs, as well as my presence on Twitter, Facebook, etc.

I have been thinking about the time I spend on Facebook and I blame the time I spend reading about x person needing y item in z game and I realized I do not need it and do not want it.

I have this blog, my company blog, my son’s blog and now the twin’s blog that have been also light on postings and I am going to change that. The time I once spent on reading garbage – will now be spent on sites that actually matter to me.

I will still be on Twitter and in fact will probably be more active on that, but it feels good to get rid of Facebook (especially since I heard W made it onto Facebook today).

Expect more old school Jappler posts in the next coming days, weeks and months!
