Random Fridays: Olympics in Chicago?

Posted by: Jen | No Comments »

Categorized: Chicago

I have been anxiously awaiting the news of whether or not Chicago will get the 2016 games and it looks like some others are getting antsy as well. The Chicago Tribune put out an article “Chicago awards contract to clear Olympics site” today that makes me even more hopeful. Of course there are plenty of rumors going around, but this makes it sound a bit more promising!

So many people have little or no expectations for our great city and I would love for the world to see what all we have to offer. We have an amazing (perhaps great) lake, an unforgettable skyline, some of the nicest people, and some pretty interesting history.

Sure the traffic will be out of control and it will be a bit overwhelming, but the excitement, jobs, and the opportunity to see some events in your own city would be amazing.

Let’s just hope we get some good news in October!

Here are some links I found interesting over the last week.

WordPress Wednesdays: Get the Current Page

Posted by: Jen | 3 Comments »

Categorized: Web Development, Wordpress

I was writing some functions that are used in the admin for my commercial WordPress theme: Lucidity and stumbled upon a great variable in WordPress: $pagenow. This variable will return the current page you are on and is great form admin functions – especially those that you want to only make available on certain pages.

To use this – just add it to your functions as a global variable, then you can use it to load in specific js/functions:

global $pagenow;
if (($pagenow == 'admin.php') && ($_GET['page'] == 'sdac_appearance')) {}

This proved to be very helpful when dealing with some finicky JS.

Random Fridays: Too Much Stuff

Posted by: Jen | No Comments »

Categorized: Serenity Now!

I am not sure what happened – but lately I feel like I am surrounded by way too much stuff. I recently went through the garage and cleaned it out, went through my office and threw away tons of phone cords, ethernet cables, triplicate serial cables for old Macs, and this weekend – it is the basement.

Our basement is the landing place for “I do not know where to put it” or “stuff I need to go through later”. You can find my huge Trent Reznor posters from college, notes from middle school – yeah, I still have some, college notebooks, PS2 games, and that dart board I “just had to have”.

I am not sure if I am overwhelmed because I do not regularly go through my stuff – or if it just seems like more now that I have a kid that also seems to have a lot of stuff too…but this weekend I am hoping to go through a bunch of old stuff, bag it up, and ship it over to Good Will.

How do others manage their “stuff”? Do you clean out annually, or more frequently? I also need a sign that says “no more nick-nacks – regardless of how much you thought of me when you saw it. ;)

WordPress Wednesdays: Jappler Category/Tag Feeds

Posted by: Jen | No Comments »

Categorized: HOWTOs, jappler.com, Wordpress

Perhaps you come to this site because you personally know me or like some of the WordPress hints I like, or like my CSS posts, or just like my personal rants (which seem to happen less…hmm I need to get on that!).

If you are only interested in some of my posts but not others, you can easily subscribe to just certain “subjects” very easily.

For example, lately I have been posting on a certain subject each day. (WordPress Wednesdays, etc). If you are only interested in reading those posts, subscribe to this RSS feed: http://www.jappler.com/blog/archive/tag/wordpress-wednesdays/feed. Perhaps you only want to read about things I post in the “Serenity Now” category. You can subscribe to http://www.jappler.com/blog/archive/category/this-and-that/serenity-now/feed. Do you see what I am doing? This logic will work on any tag or category. Find the tag URL (click on a tag) or find the category URL (click on a category in the sidebar) and then add “/feed” to the end of the URL – and there you go. A custom filtered Jappler.com feed.

Just another way WordPress makes it easy to interact with content!

Media Mondays: Get Lost Again

Posted by: Jen | 3 Comments »

Categorized: TV

I have been a “Lost” fan since the very beginning but grew frustrated the last two seasons. After knowing what I do now about the storyline – I decided to go back and watch the early episodes online (abc.com) – then I realized ABC was showing the early episodes late night. (ABC is broadcasting two episodes every Sunday – we are in Season 1 still).

It blows my mind how good (and sometimes scary) these early episodes are – and I am thoroughly enjoying them. Watching these episodes are just as exciting as the first time through and you get an additional bonus of knowing what is coming…so I am also excited to see details I missed etc.

If you are a “Lost” fan – check your local listings and if nothing else, set your DVR to record a few to have on hand when nothing else on TV looks good. It is definitely worth watching these all over again!
