Sometimes it is Just a Matter of Finding the Right Project

I have probably been busier the last four months than any other time in my life. I have not had more billable hours than usual, but I have been doing a lot of learning, debugging, learning to better debug problems, and organizing. For years I had been talking about improving my PHP and Javascript skills but as much reading/training as I did – nothing really sunk in until I found the right project to help me along and to motivate me like I wish I was years ago.

I just wanted to take some time out and thank three people in particular – Demitrious, Ken, and Brett (you know who you are!) for believing in me and being patient with me as I learned.

Demitrious showed me the way, never gave me the quick and easy answer (well maybe once or twice after driving him crazy), and always made me think about the big picture and made me get comfortable with everything uncomfortable.

Ken always knew how to do exactly what I needed – and then I learned by example, read more documentation, and made things cooler then ever before.

Brett actually never questioned if I knew how to do something – he just knew I would get it done, and done right.

Without you guys – I would probably still be relying on others instead of doing it myself. So thanks…I appreciate it!

Glam Scum

I have recently become a fan of a DJ by the name of The Scumfrog and have really enjoyed his podcast called “Glam Scum International”. If you like electronica/club/vocal trance – give him a shot. Make sure to check out episode 8 first (my favorite so far).

Socializing on the Web

We have all seen or heard of a lot of the web’s big social web sites (Facebook, MySpace, online dating, etc) but the other day when I was in the car listening to the radio – I was a combination of disturbed, somewhat impressed (with the idea that this market was targeted not the actual web site idea), and shocked that someone created a new site for socializing/dating with a whole new hook. A site for setting up “Married Dating & Affairs” (The Ashley Madison Agency) which even guarantees 100% satisfaction. Please note I am personally very against cheating or having an affair. I personally believe if you are unhappy with a relationship – it is best to get out before it gets worse. We have all seen the movies and heard the stories – affairs are nothing but trouble. I know people are always trying to make a buck – but where do you draw the line?

I was disturbed that there is now a place to easily go and seek out someone who is married and wanting an affair – and at the same time, I was also somewhat impressed that someone saw the need/market and built this site around it. Perhaps the people using it will finally be open about it on the “first date” rather than after they lie about their marital status until a few dates in and then open up the can of worms to the person that thinks they are single too.

My initial thought: “Go sanctity of marriage!” Even though I would never use the service and would hope none of the people that I know would – my only hope is that people will at least come clean and promote honesty (even though it is with strangers instead of your “partner”).

Even if you do target an audience successfully for something that is not socially acceptable and illegal, I only would hope you are responsible enough not to throw it in people’s faces with billboard ads for all to see (kids especially) with messages like “Life is short, have an affair”. I was not terribly upset with the company until I saw that advertisement which tends to promote having an affair instead of promoting their web site which is more geared towards people that have already made the choice to have the affair.

What are your thoughts?

US Post Office Sign

img_0389 Some things in life just make me laugh…and one of those signs are crazy signs. The other day I had to send something next day at the post office and when I pulled into the parking lot of one of the most ineffective establishments in the US (only second to the DMV) I had to laugh when I saw the sign that only allowed parking for 20 minutes because I cannot tell you the last time I was at a post office and was in and out within 20 minutes…on even a slow day. To the US Postal Service – please consider changing the time for parking to an hour which would be much more reasonable.

Completed: One Life Goal and One 2009 Goal

Every Easter my family went to Myrtle Beach for a week to two weeks and we stayed in my mother’s cousin’s beach house. Alone, that was exciting, but what was mesmerizing was this thing called “cable”. Sure – cable was around when I was younger, but my parents thought channels 2-13 were enough for us. I would love going to Myrtle Beach and then watching this crazy comedian named Gallagher. Ever since I first saw his great Sledge-O-Matic – I decided I had to see him live…and I am finally going to next month. He is coming to the Chicagoland area and I am totally excited to see him in action.

Another goal of mine – has been to finally start releasing some WordPress plugins and I did that earlier this week by releasing SDAC Related Content – a highly configurable, cached plugin that allows you to show related posts by category at the end of your posts or pages that does not make any database changes (perfect for WordPress VIP). I have a few more plugins that will soon be released as well as some themes. I just need time :)

Jappler Recommends: Skitch

My new consultant Ben yesterday was troubleshooting an issue with me and he sent me several links using a service called “Skitch“. I finally checked it out because I am constantly taking screenshots and low and behold – Skitch kicks ass.

Check out this image I created in a matter of seconds for an example: http://skitch.com/sdacinc/bm5yq/jappler.com-add-new-post-wordpress. I took a picture. Made some notes with text and also was able to circle content and with a touch of a button – it was uploaded to my skitch site. Very slick!

You can take a picture with your web cam, upload the images to your .Mac account, FTP server, etc.

Neighbors

I have had some beef with my neighbors in the past. They have weird habits, refuse to shovel a foot of snow on my property, and are generally strange…but I have to say the last week has given me some hope. On Thursday we had to call 911 for Evan (cracked his head on something and got a bouncy ball sized bump on his head that kept growing and growing as we went back and forth on who to call… Within a few minutes of the crew getting to our house, one of our neighbors a few houses down ran up the street to ask if the baby was ok. Another neighbor left us a card, and another neighbor left us a sticky with her phone number and a message.

I was pretty impressed and happy that we had people that actually were concerned. To those people who will never read this…thanks ;)

TiVo Mobile

I am a huge TiVo fan (TiVO – not your clunky generic DVR). Outside of TiVo – I cannot thinkg of anything I have used/seen technologically that have worked as expected for years now and still after years of the same – are still as impressive to me as the first time I used them. Skip commercials, view all my photos from my computers, listen to any music I have encoded on my computers, check weather, play games, order videos, season pass shows across multiple channels, record shows by actor, etc, all while being fast and looking and sounding great.

A few weeks (or was it months?) ago I read something about TiVo Mobile. This is a site that is built for mobile devices to make it easy to search for shows and then set your TiVo(s) to record them. I have been using my phone to do this sort of thing since I had a Treo 600 – but this new mobile only site makes it super easy to find that program you forgot to record.

Within a few minutes you can choose your show to record, set a season pass or view upcoming episodes. Thanks TiVo – great job!

Losing a Family…

Yes – I have heard. I have received multiple email messages and concerned phone calls. The soap opera – Guiding Light – that my grandmother listened to on the radio, my mother watched on the TV, and that I have watched ever since the 1980s is going to be cancelled in September. I very disappointed and after watching Guiding Light over the years with just about everyone I know at some time or another…very sad that my “second family” will no longer be around. (As crazy as it sounds, after watching the same show every day (I TiVo it every day…and recorded it on my VCR before that, and skipped class to watch it before that…who needed Spanish 100 anyway?).

Everyday for almost 20 years is something…and I am not really sure what to do. Gain an hour of not watching TV? Check out another soap that has some of my old GL favorites on it? At this point I am going to have to wait and see what some of the actors do and where they go. There is some real acting talent there…

Now that we know the end is near – please get Josh and Reva together…and I mean like tomorrow.

Cheers to an old friend!
