PHP 4 or PHP 5? You Pick the Flavor

Posted by: Jen | No Comments »

Categorized: Hints, HOWTOs, Web Development

I recently ran into a situation where there were two versions of PHP on a server and I needed to make sure PHP 5 was being used. To pick the version – all you need to do is add the following into your .htaccess file (assuming you do not have access to your httpd config):

For PHP 5:
AddType application/x-httpd-php5 .php

For PHP 4:
AddType application/x-httpd-php4 .php

It does not get much more easier than that!

Give Credit to Single Parents

Posted by: Jen | No Comments »

Categorized: People

I have to say – there are not too many days that go by where I think to myself at least once a day “I cannot imagine being a single parent”. I was sick yesterday and all I could do was lay in bed…moving was not a real option. Thankfully – I have A to help out with Evan so as soon as they got home – she kept him busy, fed him, got him ready for bed, and put him to bed, cleaned up, let Colby out, fed the cats, etc. I could not imagine having to do all of this when I was feeling like I was and yet many single moms and dads do it everyday. I give single parents all the credit in the world because their kids’ needs come first – regardless of what they might want to do, how they feel, etc. Being a parent – you see single parents completely different than people that do not have kids…and thinking back to all the people I know that raised their kids in a single parent household – you have my upmost respect.

HOWTO: Use RapidSVN for SVN

Categorized: Featured, HOWTOs, Web Development

If you are a web or application developer, there will come a time (hopefully) that you will need to use subversion for your projects. While I use the command line for this – there are some GUI applications that make it easy for people to manage their files using subversion. For this documentation, I have chosen to write about RapidSVN because it runs on both Mac and PC.

ONE TIME PROCESS

  1. Download the RapidSVN you will use to check in and check out files at: http://www.rapidsvn.org/download/release/0.9.6/. For Mac users – download the .dmg gile. For PC users, download the .exe file
  2. Install the applications on your computer.
  3. Check out the files that you want to edit. Go to the “Repository” menu and select “checkout”.
    • Enter in the URL of the repository where the files are currently located. (http://www.example.com/svn/yourfiles)
    • Choose where you want these files on your to be downloaded to on your computer (destination directory)
    • Use the latest revision (unless you have a reason to choose something else)
    • Do not worry about “Peg Revision” – Click the “Ok” button
  4. You will be prompted for a user name and password – those are for the repository. Enter in the information and your files will then be downloaded to your computer.

AFTER YOU HAVE INITIALLY CHECKED OUT THE FILES AND ARE READY TO MODIFY THEM

  1. Make changes to the existing files as needed. Once you are done, click on the icon for “Commit Change”. (Look for the up orange arrow).
  2. Enter in some documentation of the change. (Ex: I changed the CSS so that the navigation now works in IE 6)
  3. Click the “OK” button and your changes are now made to the files in the repository.

ADD NEW FILES

  1. Add the new files/folders to your local (on your desktop) copy of the files.
  2. Within RapidSVN – Click on the bookmark you want to work with on the left side of the window. On the right side – the files for that bookmarked repository will appear. You will see all your files – old and new.
    • Highlight the new files you added and click on the “Add Selected” button.
    • You will be prompted for a comment (explanation). (Ex. Added new graphic files for the header)
    • Check those new files in by clicking on the “Commit Change” button. Add another comment. (Ex. Checking in the new graphic files).

DELETE EXISTING FILES
*** Regardless of what happens – DO NOT DELETE CHECKED IN FILES USING YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM’ DELETE OPTIONS (move to trash, etc). If you want to delete a file from the repository – you must use SVN. If you delete the files with your OS – you will get errors which will stop all future edits until it is remedied. You might see a folder with a name of “.” do not worry about it, remove it, or try to delete it.
*** You can only delete files that have already been checked in. If you add files, do not check them in, and want to delete them – you can use the OS to delete the files.

  1. Within RapidSVN – Click on the bookmark you want to work with on the left side of the window. On the right side – the files for that bookmarked repository will appear.
  2. Highlight the file you want to delete and click on the “Delete Selected” icon. The file will still be listed until you check in your changes.
  3. Check in your changes by clicking on the “Commit Change” button. Add a comment. (Ex. Removed old logo file). 4. The list of files will now be updated.

A Trip Down Apple Memory Lane

I have been a die hard Apple fan since I can remember. I have a closet full of old Apple products (desktops, laptops, a Cube, eMates, Newtons, displays, iPods, etc) that I have either had in the past or have since bought for my collection. I ran across a blog post filled with pictures (and memories) of The Evolution of Apple Design Between 1977-2008. If you were ever an Apple fan or have an interest in design – check this out!

On another note – I have been collecting all this Apple stuff so that one day I can go through all of it with my kid(s) and show them just how far we have come. Let’s hope they at least find it semi-interesting!

US Inauguration Traditions

Categorized: People and Places, Politics

Yesterday for the first time I actually got the chance (or remember) to see a lot of the activities prior to the actual presidential inauguration. As someone that absolutely loves history – yesterday was so magical for so many reasons.

First of all – to see over 2 million people peacefully (no arrests) come together to share this moment was amazing. It really shows you that we are an incredible and good hearted people. There were so many stories of strangers becoming friends and enjoying the company of the person to the left or right of them.

Second of all – I got to witness a lot of the traditions that I never saw before because of school, work, etc. After seeing them – I did some research so I could provide a few interesting facts that even my sister might appreciate.

  • George Washington was sworn in on April 30, 1789 in New York City. He understood the importance of it all, but decided to wear very plain clothes to show he was a man of the people.
  • Thomas Jefferson was the first president to be sworn in as president in Washington, DC.
  • When Adams got sworn in – many of the people there paid more attention on the Washingtons leaving – so now it is custom that the ex-president leave quietly after the ceremony so all attention is on the president-elect.
  • Any book can be used to administer the oath. What would I use? One of my LBJ biographies of course.
  • In 1949, Harry Truman was the first president to have his inauguration on nationwide TV
  • In 2009, Jennifer Zelazny watched the ceremonies for the first time ever streamed on cbs.com

Best of all – there is such a sense of hope from so many individuals that never felt it. To see them so happy, so excited, and looking into the future with such promise…it is really inspiring. Let’s hope that Obama can turn things around!

Wow - it is cold!Thankfully I do not have to take the train to work, and walk across the Chicago river on days like today. We have been having highs in the negative degrees the last few days and it has been really challenging to even open the door. It is so cold that A has not had school for the last two days due to them not wanting the kids to have to wait for the bus in the morning. Poor Colby can barely make it out in the backyard for over five minutes.

Funny how I now look forward to this weekends’ temperatures in the 20s (which will crazily be a 30+ degree temperature increase). Time to play a little Tiger Woods Golf on the Wii (oh yeah Doug – I got it so feel free to get it so we can play together!) and think of warmer times!

Another quick note – this is finally the last weekend of W’s term in office…finally! I did not know if or how we would make to this point so some champagne is definitely in order. Best of luck to Obama – he definitely has a lot of work to do.

Call for All PSU Friends to Gather…

Categorized: Penn State, People, People and Places

I received a long awaited phone call yesterday – from one of my favorite people of all time: Amy G (now Amy M after getting married). We had not spoken for some time – but it was great to catch up. Amy was Amy’s (my Amy) roommate freshman and sophmore year. Not only did we catch up and talk about our great times at Penn State – we decided that it would be great if we could get together again back at Penn State during the Penn State Blue and White game (annual spring scrimmage) on April 25th. I am hopeful that we can start an annual tradition with this.

So far – it will be me and Amy, Amy G, Casey, and I promised at least one Wessner – so hopefully I can pull that off. Parents/friends are welcome. We plan to get some sort of tailgating action together so hopefully we can enjoy some time together while talking about how we cannot believe it has already been ten years. Ken – you will be there, right? ;)
