Back From Vacation

For the first time in over 10 years – A, E, and I took a week and went on vacation. We usually take weekend trips to see family but have never taken anything longer than a weekend trip (vacation) together…until last week. We flew down to Florida to see some of my family and then off to Walt Disney World where we sent seven days at the for main parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney Studios, and the Animal Kingdom). The trip was great except for the fact that I sprained my right big toe on day two and ended up seeing most of Disney in a wheel chair. (I would tell you how I sprained it, but you would never believe me.) I never realized how much you need your big toe for walking/balance.

I have to say – I had a whole new appreciation for Disney this time around and I am excited to go back. A big thanks to A’s aunt and father for everything ;)

Hopefully next week after the 4th of July, things will settle down a bit so I can get back to regular blogging!

Copy to Clipboard in the Command Line Interface (CLI)

Ever wonder how to copy something from the command line into the Mac OS clipboard? If you want to copy/paste a files content (perhaps a log file or a conf file, etc) into the clipboard to use outside of the CLI, you can use the commands pbcopy and pbpaste. Example: I want to copy the contents of my public key to the clipboard (so I can send it to a server admin who will use it in allowing me to access their subversion repository).

All I would need to do is:
cat id_dsa.pub | pbcopy

(cat writes out the content and then it is piped (|) into the clipboard) This comes in handy!

It is Apple Keynote Time Again…

I love the day of big Apple keynotes given by Steve Jobs. While rummaging around for a disk utility last week – I found my copy of the Macworld 1999 keynote where the Blue and White G3s and multi-flavored iMacs were announced. I had a smile – I eventually owned both and thought they were the best thing ever! Anyway – my friend Ken asked me if I still got as excited as I used to – and the answer is definitely yes. I love everything about the keynotes…but I especially enjoy the post keynote reactions from the people I know. People get so excited – there is even a Keynote bingo!

My predictions:

  • I will keep my fingers crossed that the new announcement(s) will increase the value of the stock
  • Ken will be underwhelmed regardless of the announcements and let me know what the x should have had ;) . (This would be true even if Apple released the coolest thing ever – he would find some “fault”.
  • Ben will be the most likely to compulsively buy the most expensive x. He will justify it somehow and I will be excited to hear about his experience with it…and then I will buy rev 2.
  • Mike will buy the newest gadget, regardless of need, and own it with much pride
  • Doug and I will sit back, not make and purchases right away, but he will end up talking me into getting something and then after he sees what I get, will get one too.
  • My friend Tim that I knew from college and met up with at WWDC in 2005 will talk to me about how we got screwed when we were there because our keynote was about the Intel transition
  • Amy will find out a few days later what is announced and tell me about it, even though she should know I knew about it moments after Steve Jobs spoke about it at the keynote
  • My parents will also talk to me a few days/weeks later about the new announcement and send me newspaper articles about it
  • Amy’s dad will finally be wowed by “x” that he will consider getting one and eventually be a switcher!

Enjoy!

Levels of Attire for a Consultant that Works at Home

After working at home for over a year now – my spectrum of “dressing up” has so many new levels – here is my personal dressiness hierarchy:

  1. The bottom: No shower – wearing pajamas
  2. Errands/average day: Shower – warmup pants, or shorts, with flip flops with a t-shirt
  3. More dressed up: Shower – nice shorts, golf shirt, flip flops
  4. Even more dressed up: Shower – nice shorts, golf shirt, sandals
  5. An outing: Shower – jeans, nice golf shirt or t-shirt, sandals
  6. Another outing: Shower – jeans, nice golf shirt, shoes
  7. An occasion: Shower – nice pants, nice golf shirt, shoes
  8. An event: Shower – a suit, heels

Why do I even mention this? The other day I had to just laugh at myself because I actually thought that “if I put sandals on instead of my flip flops – that might looks bettter..” Fun times.

Growl 1.1.3 beta 4 + Mac OS X 10.5.3 = Nightmare

I use Growl mostly for email notifications because post the Mac OS X 10.5 update IMAP flag support (new mail notification) blows. Unfortunately x2 GrowlMail (the mail notification which I love and rely on) did not work with 10.5 – so I am forced to rely on having SquirrelMail open so I can see what new mail is where within my many mailboxes. Anyway – I recently saw there was a new(er) beta available for Growl and all was working as expected until I downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.3. After that – I had a lot of weird errors and most notably – the inability to restart without physically pressing the power button until a forced restart took place. Finally – tonight (this morning) I did some research and found that other people were having the same issue and everyone with this same issue all came to the conclusion it was because of some startup item (System Preferences > Users > Login Items). Sure enough – after disabling Growl on startup, my computer restarted without any issues. Phew. Tech support is bad – but worse when it costs you time (and then money because of lost time).

Undeleting Accidentally Deleted Files

It happens to everyone – and it happened to me last week. I use my MiniStack external 500gig drive for my iTunes music library…and to make room for a complete backup (using Time Machine) I accidentally deleted all my music. Did I have a backup of all my music? No. I recently cleaned up my backup files and deleted the backup that had all my music files.

I have since changed my backups to include music on a regular basis but to get back all the lost music – I used File Salvage. The process took a long time – but I expected that when combing through a 500 gig drive. If you ever need to recover files – check this application out!
