Jappler Recommends: Room & Board (Store).

DeskI have always been a fan of Room & Board furniture. Clean lines, quality materials, and a great showroom and web site. I am at a point where my current desk has seen better days so I decided to finally look at new desks. I wanted something simple, good looking, and well built. I looked at several stores but kept coming back to Room & Board and finally chose: The Lasalle desk. Funny – my favorite desk of all times was located in an office I worked at on LaSalle street (see photo). What is going on in that picture? We were so cramped in our office, I decided that we could make desks out of old boxes for new employees, and I decided to model them. If you like clean lines and great furniture – check out Room & Board.

wordpress update notification to the rescue.

I was working on a project for a client and downloaded a plugin that was advertised to do the exact thing I needed – but when I installed it on my development server (still running 2.2 for this client) the plugin did not work. After spending time trying to figure out what the issue was, I installed it on a generic 2.3 install of WordPress so I could reference it for the plugin author (someone I have worked with to help debug his other plugins). As soon as I installed it – I got the message “a newer version of this plugin is available” and when I installed the newer version, my problems disappeared and everything worked. The update notification is gold and worth the upgrade!

wordpress 2.3 updates: afterthoughts.

I have not updated multiple web sites from WordPress 2.2.x to 2.3 and wanted to share some afterthoughts. I enjoy working with WordPress because of the simplicity of their upgrades.

  • Eight out of ten sites sites I updated so far to 2.3 had no problems whatsoever.
  • The two sites (this one was one of them) that had errors were due to outdated plugins. Once I updated the plugins to the latest versions – everything ran smoothly.
  • None of the themes I had created had any problems and some of them are quite complicated.
  • Out of all the CMSes I have installed and supported, I think WordPress is by far, the easiest to maintain and the least likely to have major problems after the upgrade. I believe this is because of the talented developers and testers behind WordPress. Great work – it is much appreciated!!

If you have not upgraded yet – be sure and check out my post on upgrading WordPress to 2.3 and enjoy the new version!

I wrote a detailed process on how I upgraded and cleaned out jappler.com to go from WordPress 2.2 to WordPress 2.3. If anyone is interested in the process, check out my “Updating from WordPress 2.2 to 2.3” blog post on my company blog.

Leaf Bug This post was going to be about updating jappler.com from WordPress 2.2.x to WordPress 2.3RC 1, but on the way back from my daily walk with Triscuit (my greyhound) I noticed a super cool bug on the side of my house. I decided to share my picture of it instead of talking about the bugs I ran into when upgrading to the latest version of WordPress (Don’t be too jealous of my sweet sandbox). Speaking of bugs – I also had 3 swarms of flying ants in my house yesterday that I noticed while on a conference call. Good thing I handle these situations very calm, cool, and collected.

Beautiful Charts, Diagrams, and Maps

How many times are you going to use that nasty looking Excel chart to show your data? If you are like me and are tired of seeing ugly charts, diagrams, and maps, check out: amCharts. Hmm, another example where 1. I do not have to use Office to get a chart and 2. it is much nicer! Good work!!

software trends.

In the past few years, I have used AppleWorks, Keynote, Open Office, Neo Office, Google Docs, and yes, Microsoft Office for my document, spreadsheet, and presentation needs. I have not been too happy with any of the options – but yesterday things changed. I downloaded the new version of Open Office (v.2.3) and I tried Google’s presentation software within their free web based office software called “Google Docs” and no longer do I miss Microsoft Office at all. I do not get stuck with weird MS Office bugs and I do not have to spend my money on their licenses. I get the ability to do online collaboration, and to use open source software without worrying if this will be “the” last version Microsoft puts out for us Mac users. The fear is gone – and innovation is everywhere. I would be worried too if I was MS.

Over the last year or so, it has very interesting to see how technology has shifted. It is extremely rare (less than 1 client per year) that wants any sort of static web site. On the office front, over the past few months, clients have been coming to me with their Google documents and spreadsheets, sharing them for collaboration instead of passing Microsoft Office documents back and forth. They want to use Base Camp for project management and are keeping more and more of their assets accessible online. They are also contacting me after they have made the decision to move to a content management system (not before) – and they know exactly what they want.

It is quite exciting to me to see users empowered by the software they use instead of what I was used to: seeing users who continue to suffer and fall behind because of the software they used. I look forward to seeing where Google goes with their office software and when people are going to start realizing that open source software is leading the way in innovation – not the big software companies (for the most part) that charge big bucks for their software. Once the users are empowered, look out!

If you are a WordPress user or developer, check out the WordPress Podcast. I recently started listening to it and it is a great resource for all levels of WordPress users.

What Am I Listening To These Days?

People that know me, know I like to listen to my music with the volume cranked up, that I work better with music in the background, and that I am passionate about great music. For the last few years, I have really gotten into vocal trance (dance music that is a bit more edgy/hard than what you would hear on the radio). I listen to a lot of great podcasts and wanted to let others out there (like my sister) know that there is some great music (free) out there.

They are free – so check them out!

back playing socom ii.

It has been at least a year – probably 2 since I stopped playing SoCom II but a few weeks Doug started playing again and got me interested again. I have to say, playing it on my new TV which is almost twice the size of my old TV is definitely nice. It is equally nice that the same old grumpy men and wannabe 12 year olds are still there to make it interesting. I forgot how much I missed listening to these 2 types of people argue – it is really pretty fun – especially when you have a headset and can add in comments. The online gaming community is an interesting one and I am glad I am back!
