fun with postfix and launchd.

If it is not one thing, it is another. I recently had to set up a web server using Mac OS X 10.4 that needed PHP 5 and Postfix so I could send email via a particular PHP script. I used Marc Liyanage ‘s PHP 5 package and then decided to to then use Mac OS X’s built install of Postfix to handle the mail. After having some issues getting Postfix working, I finally found a great article on http://www.macosxhints.com which helped with my mail and launchd questions – as I have never had to do anything with launchd up until this point. (Goodbye cron, hello launchd)

At this point I was pretty proud of myself and figured I got Postfix working because of my pizza combos intake, but then a few minutes later and a ton of email messages later, I realized all my failed attempts and test messages had built up in the que. I now had to scramble to unplug the server and figure out how to manage the Postfix queue…something I had never done before. Enter my quick tips for managing the Postfix queue:

  • To view the queue, use: mailq
  • To delete a message, use:postsuper -d 111 (111= the message ID found by running mailq)
  • If you want to delete all messages in the queue, use: postsuper -d ALL

One problem solved, 24 more to go ;)

I came across an awesome HOWTO on getting linux and games on your iPod. Now if I just had a color screen iPod (I have gen 2).

On another note, WordPress.com now offers “VIP Hosting” which would be a great option for a few projects I am working on. Great job Automattic!

If you have not been to despair.com stop now, go there and then come back. For those seasoned workers, now it is your turn to make your own crafty posters with the Parody Motivator Generator. The site is slow loading, but it is worth the wait.

using the title attribute in html links.

Ever wonder how to get a mouse over “tool tip” to appear without much hassle? Use the title attribute (keep your mouse over the link for a few seconds to see this in action). Not only does this help your users/readers get more information, it also helps people who are using auditory browsers will have the title information read to them. Not all links should use the title link, but if you want to provide additional information to your audience, give it a shot. Be aware that different browsers treat the title attribute differently.

The US tries to connect with teens…again.

On another note. Gas prices have fallen almost a dollar in the last month and a half. Thank goodness…now Ford and GM can start selling their SUVs again. (I am sure there is no coincidence there.)

quick paint clean up tip.

What do you do when someone you think is coming over to your house to do you a favor (“hey do you still need some help…”) , make a mess, request money and leave all while living with someone who is very detail oriented and who does not take any crap? I do not know what you would have done, but I called my resourceful father.

The main problem (besides having to rip down the existing crown molding to replace it, and having to repaint the trim and baseboards – was that sloppy edging work left paint all over our nice stained window molding/casing. Amy was extremely disgusted with the sloppy paint all over the stained wood so I called my dad to see what he would recommend. If anyone knew how I might be able to get the paint off (no it would not pick off) my father wood. He recommended – since the paint had only been on for a few days – to use some Mr. Clean and some hot water on the abrasive side of our dish sponge (one side is sponge, one side is rough to get off tough grease or paint apparently. I scrubbed the wood around the windows for about 5-10 minutes and then was able to then pick and peel off the paint.

I am having a carpenter come over in the next two days to look at our options with the baseboards and crown molding disaster. The way it looks now – it will be easier to buy new. (the paint color is a dark blue and we do not have the paint that was used for the white on the crown molding and base boards.)

Take home lesson…as I well know and am really upset this one got past me…if you want it done right, do it yourself or hire a well known professional.

wordpress resources.

I have been creating more CMS web site solutions using WordPress over the last year and and have collected some great resources along solid product right out of the box, it is highly configurable, there are endless plugins, and everything is well documented. So, if you are ever looking to build a web site using WordPress and want to do it for yourself I would recommend using:

  1. WordPress Documentation (Codex)
  2. WordPress Plugins Database
  3. My del.icio.us bookmarks (check out WordPress/Logic, WordPress/Plugins, WordPress/Templates). I will continue to add to these bookmarks so stay tuned.

mini stack.

To address my increasing backup needs as well as my need for more FireWire and USB ports, I decided to buy a miniStack (500GB). I own a Mac Mini and so the miniStack seemed like the perfect solution. Now comes my friendly reminder to all those reading that do not back up…back it up! On another note, I also recently started using SVN for all my business projects (thanks Demitrious) which is backed up offsite. Back up!

9/11 and the media.

Well, five years ago today I was glued to the TV, watching two live shots while also following two breaking news text feeds at the bottom of the TV screen while surfing CNN.com. Wow. Once again, I find myself watching countless shows about 9/11 and soaking up more information about the events of 9/11 that I never knew. Personally, as a historian, this is all very interesting to me. Why? I am curious to get as much information as possible because I am very curious how this will be portrayed in the years to come. How will my children and their children see this? I like getting the personal stories of the survivors, emergency workers, and their families. I also watched the CNN re-broadcast of their live 9/11 coverage this morning. Why? When all this was happening five years ago, I was in my office, next to the Sears Tower, without any incoming information except that of Amy’s dad calling me and telling me to get home, and a high school friend who was trying to explain the events to me over the phone. While some people are very negative about all the shows, interviews, conversations, coverage, I embrace it. Let’s not forget what happened, and let’s try to better understand it so we can learn.
