I had another busy weekend this past weekend and one of my many tasks was to download and try RoundCube webmail (PHP, MySQL, XHTML, CSS). I have been using Squirrelmail since early 1999 but was intrigued my Alex King’s post on RoundCube webmail a few weeks ago. The install was painless and I had everything up and running in a matter of minutes. The user interface is gorgeous (something that I cannot say about Squirrelmail), but since it is still in an early beta release, there is not too many fancy features like filtering, plugins, etc. I decided not to replace Squirrelmail just yet, but I have the install up and ready to go to test further so I can send back some helpful feedback to the developers. If you have simple webmail needs and you want to use an amazing UI, check this package out!

ubuntu 5.10 for PPC.
Well, after some problems downloading the 3.3GB image of Fedora Core 5 and then my PowerBook not recognizing the DVD media (no, I was not about to re-download all five install CD images and burn them to CD…this is not 1993 again with installer floppies everywhere…and I did not have any other DVD media on hand), I decided to try a different flavor of Linux: Ubuntu. A few people that I I have been talking to recently either prefer Ubuntu, or have recently tried it, like Tim. Since the install image is only 644.5MB, I decided it might be the time to try it out.
From the very beginning, I was impressed. I first had problems with my install because of a CD error, but to my delight, the Ubuntu installer gav eme an option to set up a web server with a click of a button which served all the installation log files so I could look at them and find the problem. When I got home, I burned another copy and while my Comcast connection was out (TV and internet!) I installed and configured Ubuntu with ease.
What I really like so far about Ubuntu:
- small install (one CD worth)
- Ubuntu recognized all my hardware without me having to hack anything!
- the ability to run Ubuntu from a CD (live CD)
- awesome documentation in the help menu…the “Tips and Tricks” rock, and answered most of my questions
- the “Snaptic Package Manager” which easily allows you to install packages
- after installing packages with the “Snaptic Package Manager”, the new applications are put in appropriate menus, etc!
- the great little sounds I get when clicking on buttons and icons

So far, I am extremely happy with Ubuntu and look forward to using it more and more. It is plenty fast and if all goes well, I may see how it runs on my Apple cube so I can get that back into play. As of now…this is, by far, my favorite flavor of Linux I have played with (Yellow Dog, Mandrake (Mandriva), Redhat, and Fedora FC3, FC4). If you are looking to run Linux, give Ubuntu some attention – it gets the Jappler stamp of approval!
PS. Happy 5th birthday to Mac OS X today. Five years ago, Mac OS X 10.0 was released!

ava update.
Well, it is coming up on three weeks now that we have had Ava. She has been a joy to have and we are excited to say Greyhounds Only has most likely found a permanent home for Ava. I realize I do not post enough pictures, so I am going to try to do a better job from now on. Enjoy the updated pictures!

time suck.
Some days are more fun than others. I did not have time to install Fedora Core 5 today, but will hopefully get that going in the next few days. Lots of work, but hopefully I will be able to wrap a few things up tomorrow. A big congrats to Doug as he is working on his first CSS web site! Rock on! I still cannot sing enough praises for w3schools.com for a reference, or learning the basics on HTML, CSS, SQL, etc.
Somethings interesting to note:
- Coca Cola’s new drink: Blak
- Google Finance
- Phlink – I like the concept

fedora core 5 for PPC users is available.
I have not had any recent how-tos or informational articles, but I am hoping to end that dry spell tomorrow after I install and configure Fedora 5. I have been very happy with Fedora 3 and 4, and look forward to the most recent release. Stay tuned.
PS…yeah I know that other builds, besides PPC are also out, but they are not my concern at this point.

from the train.
On my way into work I thought about how better to allocate my time so I can fit in time to relax. (sad, I know) I ended up thinking I could save some time at night by blogging on my way home on the train…so here I go.
The last few days have been challenging. Ava, my foster greyhound that I took in, is causing me to break out in hives. I had been taking benedryl to control it but that left me extremely drowsy and unable to work.
I got a perscription today from my doctor to help with this and hope that I can go through the weekend without having an allergic reaction.
Other than Ava giving me hives, she has been a wonderful dog. She snuggles, is very personable, plays fetch like a champ, and gives my own greyhound a run for her money. Triscuit is trying to figure out the fetch concept and has made me laugh in the process.
Anyone looking for a low maintenance dog breed that will come into your home pretty well trained…consider a greyhound.

moxie and tax day.
Well, as 2005 is my first year as a small business owner, I am learning something new everyday. On Monday, I learned the importance of having a really good accountant, as he called me and gave me a heads up on the fact that my 2005 taxes were due today. Thankfully he prepared an extension letter and sent me the details of what I would need to do to make sure I would not be penalized. I had met with my accountant earlier this year to learn QuickBooks and to get to know him before tax time…thankfully that paid off. Thanks!
While trying to find someplace close to mail the letter to the state, and needed to get it stamped today, I stumbled onto a little shipping/mailbox store that not only sold me some stamps, but also sold me a bottle of Moxie. Seems there is local business called Retro Soda Inc that he had partnered with to provide these retro sodas in his store. I had heard of Moxie on FoodTV, but never saw it in any stores. Given the chance to have another…I would. It is an interesting taste…some cola, and some anis, but all in all, a good find!

PS, the item next to the Moxie is my 1986 Volvo 760 GLE’s starter ignition switch. ![]()

work work work.
Bork bork bork.
I am so thankful that it is still 30 degrees outside with the possibility of snow. Why? I do not feel bad about working 14 hours a day! I have to say…even after working a full day down in the city, I look forward to coming home and working on Ookles. (Sorry to those who have waited so long to see what I have been up to, but the wait will be worth it. ) Hopefully in a month or two, once things slow down a bit and the weather is a little nicer, I will be out on the golf course with Doug finally mastering my chipping and my 3 iron. Stay tuned!
dedication.
I just got done reading an excellent article “How to be an expert” that hit home. How many times did I try to learn CSS, then get frustrated and go back to tables? More than a few times for sure! The take home lesson of course is that hard work and dedication do pay off in the long run. If you have a few moments and are looking for something intresting to read…check it out. Then again…the people that should really read this will most likely not go to the link or if they do, will not read through the entire article. Classic.
New Family Member: Ava.
Amy and I have been involved in Greyhounds Only for a few years now and we recently went to a fostering seminar with hopes of fostering new or returned greyhounds. I picked up Ava this afternoon from a pretty sketchy home. Her nails were extremely long and her ears were fithly, but she cuddled with me right away and did wonderfully on her trip with me to her new home. Time will tell if she is the right dog for us (Triscuit) or if someone else will be lucky enough to spend time with her. For now, here are some pictures of Triscuit, Salsa, and Ava. Pita is a bit camera shy.
