As a recent convert to diet pop (yes, pop not soda), I recently learned about the difference between diet coke and coke zero. Surprisingly enough (well to me at least) I learned that Diet Coke is based on the New Coke recipe whereas Coke Zero is based off of the Classic Coke recipe. Makes you think…or at least it made me think. After a taste test…I much prefer Coke Zero. Are you a secret New Coke fan?
PS…Happy Birthday Doug!

Well well…if it is not one thing it is the other. I went to pick up Ken this morning at O’Hare and as we were in the first toll booth, stopped, waiting for the person in front of me to pay…smash! I did not know what happened for a few minutes, but then we realized we were hit from the back. No high speeds, no air bags deployed, but I thought for sure I would walk around and see a huge dent or something on my beautiful S80 T6. When I looked around, I only saw a little scratch. Then I looked at the piece of garbage souped up Civic behind me. Their customized front was cracked in half. Sure, the guy did a hit and run (he promised he would follow us to trade info, but never pulled off the highway when we did), but Ken got his license plate. No one got hurt, and we will see what happens with my slight paint issue, but regardless…I will always smile when I think about how my car held up compared to the other “souped up” 4 cylindar piece of garbage. Have fun fixing that repair buddy.
After finally getting some to to set up my development environment, I began thinking…why am I not using Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.1.2? What made me think about this? “Legacy Release” The phrase “legacy release” is what httpd.apache.org described Apache 1.3.x as in their news section. I have been using Apache 1.x for several years now, only ever really thinking about migrating to 2.0 because of the need to run a subversion server. I have a solid web server solution in place that has made me very happy for the last few years using Apache 1.3.x, but it is finally time to check out something in the 2.x family, and I am going to make that 2.2. I am going to spend some time tomorrow reading about any known issues (especially with PHP, as I remember that being a show stopper for my interest in 2.0 before) and then install/configure it. Stay tuned for some tutorials on what I did to get everything up and running!

I have been using open source solutions for over seven years now. (my first open source experience was with mailman and then ht://dig and squirrelmail soon after – all of which I still use today) I made it a priority to get involved with at least one open source project this year, and to start out I have chosen to get involved with WordPress. I signed up to help with browser testing and to look at ways WordPress can offer more CMS features. I have extensive browser testing experience and have plenty of CMS and WordPress as a CMS experience that I look forward helping with the WordPress project and giving something back to a great community. If you would also like to help, check out the WordPress Development page.

I know I reference several web pages, blog posts, etc but if you only one of my links this entire year…do yourself a favor and read O’Reilly’s article on web 2.0 “What Is Web 2.0. If you decide to follow two links, check out the other web 2.0 article: “The Hype and the Hullabaloo of Web 2.0. You will soon notice in the next few weeks/months that I will be transforming jappler.com into a more web 2.0 environment. For now…I have moved to an AJAX based calendar and started using technorati tags. Up next…content rethought.

Finally! (See part 1 and part 2) I have been wanting to check out Solaris for a few years, and now I have a fully functional system at home! Of course there were several roadblocks. CD errors. Drive space issues. Questions like: How do I boot from a CD? How do I format the hardrive? What does x error mean? Where do I go for support? all came up, but through extreme patience and an obsession for completing this project made this possible. Basically, if there could be an error or some sort of roadblock, I hit it.
For future Solaris installs in case I forget:
format command will not format all drives.OK prompt. Wow, that was trying. I only figured this out because I was so frustrated I thought I would leave it alone and play a few SoCom 3 games…after the third round when I saw the OK prompt, I was so excited!Overall, I am very happy things finally worked and I am able to work with Solaris for professional development. I am actually writing this post from my Sun Sparc workstation right now! Here are some screenshots of my environment. I still need to get the resolution to something acceptable, but it does what I need it to do now.
Wow. While I find it interesting dealing with a diverse group of people, I also find it interesting that some people have no clue to to socially interact with others. My short list of people pet peeves begin here.
