diet coke v. coke zero.

As a recent convert to diet pop (yes, pop not soda), I recently learned about the difference between diet coke and coke zero. Surprisingly enough (well to me at least) I learned that Diet Coke is based on the New Coke recipe whereas Coke Zero is based off of the Classic Coke recipe. Makes you think…or at least it made me think. After a taste test…I much prefer Coke Zero. Are you a secret New Coke fan?

PS…Happy Birthday Doug!

Volvo 1, Souped Up Civic 0

Well well…if it is not one thing it is the other. I went to pick up Ken this morning at O’Hare and as we were in the first toll booth, stopped, waiting for the person in front of me to pay…smash! I did not know what happened for a few minutes, but then we realized we were hit from the back. No high speeds, no air bags deployed, but I thought for sure I would walk around and see a huge dent or something on my beautiful S80 T6. When I looked around, I only saw a little scratch. Then I looked at the piece of garbage souped up Civic behind me. Their customized front was cracked in half. Sure, the guy did a hit and run (he promised he would follow us to trade info, but never pulled off the highway when we did), but Ken got his license plate. No one got hurt, and we will see what happens with my slight paint issue, but regardless…I will always smile when I think about how my car held up compared to the other “souped up” 4 cylindar piece of garbage. Have fun fixing that repair buddy.

blogging causes breakup!

Well well…web 2.0 unexpectedly comes to life in my social circle. What? Someone that I know broke up with her boyfriend after “he wrote nasty things about her on his blog.” The blog changes everything! TMI everyhere! Back when I was younger I used to pass notes on a daily basis to close friends and boyfriends. Now, more than ever, kids/young adults are using the internet, and more specifically, web sites like myspace.com to freely express what is going on in their lives.

This “blogging causes breakup” is very interesting to me because this is the first time I have ever heard about something like this, and the fact that it happened to someone that is close to me makes it even more interesting. There is both humor and a lesson in this. The humor…come on…a breakup over blogging. This makes me realize blogs are like a version of the no-names’ “tabloids” in some aspects. Common peoples’ breakups and makeups are now being publically recorded in a new medium…that I can subscribe to using RSS!

The lesson…if you can control your web site with meta tags and/or the robots.txt file…DO SO! If you cannot control your meta tags and robots.txt file…make sure you think twice before you post something. Not only will your family/friends read what you write, but so will your employer and future employer ;) . Basically…do not write or share something that you do not want everyone to write.

This posting made me realize…I needed to register a new domain name…a cousin of thebareminimum.com: invasivetechnology.com. Why? Definitition for invasive: Tending to intrude or encroach, as upon privacy.

apache 2.20, php 5, and mysql 5 on mac os x.

After finally getting some to to set up my development environment, I began thinking…why am I not using Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.1.2? What made me think about this? “Legacy Release” The phrase “legacy release” is what httpd.apache.org described Apache 1.3.x as in their news section. I have been using Apache 1.x for several years now, only ever really thinking about migrating to 2.0 because of the need to run a subversion server. I have a solid web server solution in place that has made me very happy for the last few years using Apache 1.3.x, but it is finally time to check out something in the 2.x family, and I am going to make that 2.2. I am going to spend some time tomorrow reading about any known issues (especially with PHP, as I remember that being a show stopper for my interest in 2.0 before) and then install/configure it. Stay tuned for some tutorials on what I did to get everything up and running!

wordpress development.

I have been using open source solutions for over seven years now. (my first open source experience was with mailman and then ht://dig and squirrelmail soon after – all of which I still use today) I made it a priority to get involved with at least one open source project this year, and to start out I have chosen to get involved with WordPress. I signed up to help with browser testing and to look at ways WordPress can offer more CMS features. I have extensive browser testing experience and have plenty of CMS and WordPress as a CMS experience that I look forward helping with the WordPress project and giving something back to a great community. If you would also like to help, check out the WordPress Development page.

web 2.0.

I know I reference several web pages, blog posts, etc but if you only one of my links this entire year…do yourself a favor and read O’Reilly’s article on web 2.0 “What Is Web 2.0. If you decide to follow two links, check out the other web 2.0 article: “The Hype and the Hullabaloo of Web 2.0. You will soon notice in the next few weeks/months that I will be transforming jappler.com into a more web 2.0 environment. For now…I have moved to an AJAX based calendar and started using technorati tags. Up next…content rethought.

installing solaris 10, part 3.

Posted by: Jen | No Comments »

Categorized: General, Serenity Now!

Finally! (See part 1 and part 2) I have been wanting to check out Solaris for a few years, and now I have a fully functional system at home! Of course there were several roadblocks. CD errors. Drive space issues. Questions like: How do I boot from a CD? How do I format the hardrive? What does x error mean? Where do I go for support? all came up, but through extreme patience and an obsession for completing this project made this possible. Basically, if there could be an error or some sort of roadblock, I hit it.
For future Solaris installs in case I forget:

  • How to format a drive that was in one of my old Macs…format the drive in your Mac. The format command will not format all drives.
  • Tip for Mac users: Have an older Mac around thac can format a drive…and have a Mac OS X install CD handy incase you get a Disk Utility error which will not allow you to format a drive. (All signs pointed to “Jen do not install another OS on a non-Mac” throughout this entire exercise…it was hideous.
  • How to start up from an install CD, format the drive, and partition the drive
  • What to do with the error: Unexpected token…/etc/driver/aliases” tha repeated for over 10 minutes straight before I got to the OK prompt. Wow, that was trying. I only figured this out because I was so frustrated I thought I would leave it alone and play a few SoCom 3 games…after the third round when I saw the OK prompt, I was so excited!
  • How to add users
  • What to do with the error: XServer does not support the XRandR extension
  • Use the Sun Software Download Manager to download updates, etc

Overall, I am very happy things finally worked and I am able to work with Solaris for professional development. I am actually writing this post from my Sun Sparc workstation right now! Here are some screenshots of my environment. I still need to get the resolution to something acceptable, but it does what I need it to do now.

people pet peeves.

Posted by: Jen | No Comments »

Categorized: People, Serenity Now!

Wow. While I find it interesting dealing with a diverse group of people, I also find it interesting that some people have no clue to to socially interact with others. My short list of people pet peeves begin here.

  1. The person who talks over everyone else. Wow. Sound familiar? I pick up the phone to talk to someone that needs my help. I pick up the phone, being introducing myself politely, and before I can say anything more…the other voice on the phone starts talking over me, talking about what is wrong. As soon as I sense a pause, I try to offer my help, but the voice again starts talking over me…so much so that I do not say anything until they are for sure done. I then attempt to say what I tried before, but stopped because I do not want to talk over someone that s talking over me. Although I can deal with this situation by patiently waiting…having someone talk over me, especially when they want my assistance, is my #1 people related pet peeve. Want to test my patience? Try this trick.
  2. The salesman who always assumes “the man of the house” is the decision maker. Ladies, this has to sound familiar. When buying my Volvo #2, I brought a friend a long for the search. Who did the salesman go right up to? My male friend. I also called a business this weekend to set up an appointment for a home related repair. After asking me if the man of the house would be home for the decision making process, I told him he would not have my business. Business lesson learned: never assume.
  3. The person who always has to have the last word. This is that guy in my History 20 class that I avoided at all costs, yet seemed to always get thrown into discussion groups with him…which was completely worthless because it ended up being a who can get the last word in. The Mac OS X Server listserve has one of these too. Unfortunately, I have also been introduced to one of these people in the recent past. Lots of deep breaths…and hopes for a good SNL skit of an episode of The Office about “that guy”. PS. Your insecurities are obvious.
  4. The loud cell phone talker. This is a given for anyone who takes public transportation. Really, we do not care that your child’s teacher is “lying” about your son’s homework completion. In fact, we believe your son is the actual liar in the bunch. It was a happy day when I again overhear you yell at your son because you found out the teacher was telling the truth. Thanks for that laugh.
