I have to share a converstation about what I do at work with Amy…

Amy: This hot weather is crazy. You should feel the temperature change from 12pm to 5pm just becuase of the suns’s position change.
Jen: Yeah, thank goodness I work in an airconditioned building and do not have to go outside.
Amy: Yeah, you are lucky all you really all you do is sit in front of a screen and press buttons.
Jen: (at this poinst what was I to say?) I do click a mouse too.

Now that is quality conversation!

my new favorite browser?

camino

I spend a lot of time each day using a web browser (I have 4 browsers open now…Firefox, IE, Safari, and Camino). If I am not working out CSS bugs, I am looking something up using google.com, or playing a Yahoo! game, or editting my blog, or just looking at my favorite sites. It is not too often a new browser emerges that I do not spend a lot of time with it, either for QA reasons or just to check it out, and it is even less often that I do not play around new browsers. I have to say, I was late (version .91a) to check out Camino, but I have to say, I think Camino might be my new favorite browser.

I really like:

  • Clean interface.
  • Tabs in Camino. I love Safari because when I am ready to close a tab, there is an “x” on the tab that you can quickly and easily press to close it. With Firefox and other browsers that support tabbed browsing, you have to go to the far right of the window to find the “x” button, and have the tab you want to close as the front most window.
  • Simplicty.
  • Plugins
  • Supports latest W3C standards.

What I miss (from other browsers):

Humidity

This humidity is driving me crazy…how is it that so many others, including myself live in an area that has such extreme temperature changes? I remember a few months ago barely able to go outside to walk Triscuit in the cold, now here I am with extreme heat and humidity. On another note…I have been using public transportation for a number of years now, but never did I see what I saw today…someone clipping their nails over their purse, then pushing the clippings into her purse. Wow.

When I think about my average day in front of the computer and the tasks that I do…it is unbelievable how much different it is and it makes me wonder what everything will look like in 5-10 years. Google’s search engine changed it all. I want to take a moment to thank Dr. McMurry for taking the time with me at Penn State when discussing me switching majors from communications to history. I will alway remember and be thankful for everything I learned from her. I remember asking her what skills she thought a history major could bring to the job market and she went on to talk about how important it was to be able to collect, organize, and process information. Over the past ten years I have been exposed to a number of technologies…all with different levels of mastery. But overall, I have one skill, above all others, that I have mastered…the ability to collect, organize, and process information. I may not be able to tell you off hand how to create rounded corners in CSS, or to configure your network card with ifconfig, but I can tell you where to go find this information, and the process I would go through to get the job done. My depth comes with finding information to form solutions. I have never regretted my focus in college, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. What I can tell you…is that in a few years we are going to be surrounded by indexed information, and I look forward to the challenge of making sense of it all with the skill set Dr. McMurry taught me during some of the best years of my life.

yubnub

I found a great search resource this morning: YubNub Using a few commands, you can filter your searches by using certain commands to give the best match possible. Pretty handy. (There is even a Firefox plugin for YubNub) Other than that, I am completely exhausted from my recent travels. I am looking forward to some downtime that does not include working on presentations and the like! ;)

voodoo wings and the blues.

Well instead of coming back early and installing Fedora Core 4, I decided to go out with a friend to a little cajun restaurant and listen to see blues by Watermelon Slim. Good times, great food and I highly recommend both if you are ever in St. Louis.

tapas in St. Louis.

Well, St. Louis is no San Francisco, and definitely no Chicago, but I had some great tapas last night at Mosaic. I have been so busy travelling and creating presentations, I have not had time to sit down and do a few tech tips and HOWTO posts, but never fear, I will be up for it next week. I just need a break. Speaking of breaks, for fun tonight (after visiting a nice local pub) I will be installing Fedora Core 4 and will surely have something cool to post about.

Feel free to whip out the “wrap it up” box, but I have to give my summary on San Francisco in ten thoughts or less.

  • San Francisco…inital thought: “hate the airport” (it is just not O’Hare).
  • Second random thought…”damn this weather is awesome.”
  • Third random thought…”holy cow, there is no grass, just rows of houses.”
  • Fourth random thought…”this weather is amazing!”
  • Fifth random thought: “I wonder what Steve will say at the WWDC keynote?”
  • Sixth random thought…”how is it possible to be with so many Penn Staters?”
  • Seventh random thought…”wow, maybe I do like chololate” (Ghirardellis).
  • Eight random thought: “No!!!! It is not true”
  • Nineth random thought: “yeah, this weather is where it at!”
  • Tenth random thought…”I think I actually like it out here.”
