Well the day has finally come: Apple’s release of 10.4. There are tons of new feautures I am excited to check out but none more than the added .mac sync functionality. To be able to have all my mail rules available on all my computers…I have been waiting for this since .mac came out. finally: Tiger arrives!
pre office space movie: the SNL cartoons.
Every once and awhile I will get bored, so I sit down in front of the TV, hit the TiVo button on the remote and search for upcoming programs I think I would like to watch. A few days ago, I decided it would be nice to record some old SNLs (old=1990s). You really cannot get enough of Chris Farley, right? Last night I decided I needed some downtime after facing some frustration with talking to people in India about my new mortgage company’s screw up. Anyways, I decided to watch the SNL that Sara Gilbertson hosted in 1994. Great skits for the most part, but the last one really blew my mind. I remember watching this episode live but the last skit completely slipped my mind. I am also an avid Office Space fan, so when I saw the last skit was a cartoon written by Mike Judge called Office Space I was blown away. It was basically a cartoon version of a scene from the movie Office Space, and it was great! So, if you get a chance, catch some old SNL episodes and check out the cartoon version of the movie we all know and love.
my mcdonalds experience in 750 characters or less.
McDonalds is asking old/current McDonalds employees to share their McDonalds experience with them in 750 characters or less so here is what I submitted:
I love McDonalds, I always have. Nothing sounded better to me when I was little than a plain hamburger happy meal, in a cool box, with great McDonalds cookies, coke, and that playground. When I turned 17 I knew I wanted to work at McDonalds. One squirt of ketchup, one shot of mayonnaise, 42 seconds for the burgers – everything was well thought out and I appreciated that. From my experience at McDonalds, I learned a number of lessons that have helped me today as a web developer. First, know your customer. Second, with efficient operating procedures you can do your job effectively. Third, service with a smile works wonders. I am very proud and very glad to have had the opportunity to have McDonalds be my first job.
Marketing Gone Bad
Now to take a minute out of your day to remember April 23, 1985, the day that will ever be remembered in marketing history.
soup nazi.
It never fails that I can say “Do you watch Seinfeld? Do you remember the episode when…” and then I go on about how much my situation sounds like something in a Seinfeld episode. Well, yet again, Seinfeld enters my life…

And for all of us who do not live in New York City, we shall be able to eat the famous soup too now!
know your resources: mailing lists.
I like to think I know a lot about web design, hosting, development, etc, but I also like to think when I am unsure of something, I know where I like to go. (not to mention I like to use commas) If you are a web developer with questions or would like to help web developers with their questions, check out the following lists:

tiger (10.4) and apple.com.
Most people that would be reading this are probably very familar with Apple’s web site and know that Mac OS X 10.4 is coming out later this month on April 29th. My random thought for the day…when is Apple going to update their web site design? Apple’s web site design has been very influencial over the past few years, but it is uncomfortably obvious they have outgrown the current design. The layout is still solid…top navigation, centered content, but the top navigation bar screams Mac OS X Cheetah: pin striping, candy buttons, and…Mac OS X. The content area screams Tiger: slick, shiny, and polished. I just have to wonder when Apple is going to update the top part of their web site to better fit in. For the first time in a long time, I can say I think Apple’s web site looks a little mismatched and because of that, it makes it look a little out of date. (Not quite like Sun out of date.)
As a web developer, I understand how much goes into a redesign and the concept of new. Users like their habits, and they do not always appreciate change because it forces them to break old habits and create new ones. But since I think Apple has a solid layout, I wish they would just release a new top navigation design. Just taking the pin striping out would most likely be enough.
Do not get me wrong, I like both looks Apple is sporting now, just not together. One has to imagine Apple will announce a new design soon, anyone want to take a stab at when? I say at the Developer’s Conference as they announce a breakthrough tool they then say “built with..”, but I have been dreaming of that for years. Come Apple, say goodbye to the pin striping if you are going to go with a black background in the content area. Come on.
the rubik's cube.
I have a friend that has been in the hospital for over a week now, and for fun her mother decided it might be nice to bring in some games, etc to play with as we wait in the waiting room. Well, two Saturdays ago, I decided it was time for me to finish something I started in the 1908s as a young child…the rubik’s cube. Three hours later, the same day, Susan’s grandmother was getting frustrated just watching…a week later, I am now the big joke. I keep getting really close (most sides with all the same color, then within a matter turns, the cube looks like garbage. I swear I will figure out the last few moves before the week is up and Susan is out of the hospital, but I hope she is out long before I finish. At least her mother is ready with the camera to take my picture when I master the cube.
If I can learn perl, I can master the rubik’s cube. I will figure this out.
new mcdonalds (50th anniversary restaurant).
Someone like me cannot pass up McDonalds events.
McDonalds will always have a special place in my heart after working there in high school and college and then passing on tips and tricks of the trade. Doug even bought me a McDonalds book that I absolutely loved. Ok, to get to the point…McDonalds opened a new awesome 50th anniversary McDonalds which is amazing, and of course in our beloved city of Chicago. Doug, Ben and I went to the opening and were mighty impressed…well with the building, not the higher prices! If you are in Chicago, this is a spot to check out!
and the winner is: Sun Ultra 10.
Time to learn Solaris, yeah. Time to get a PC, no.
I finally got a Sun Ultra 10 lined up for me, and should hav eit some time next week. I am not looking for speed or anything much, just something to play around with, learn Solaris, and get serious about high availabilty servers. If all goes well, I will have a Sun Blade 1500 someday. On another note, Fedora FC3 is working out well, and I am enjoying learning the ins and outs of it.
